Lagos hospital screens students for oral health

The Orile Agege General Hospital has screened 2,500 students from schools as part of events marking this year’s World Oral Health Day

According to a statement made available to newsmen, the exercise, which held at the Government Senior College Hall, was in collaboration with Lagos State Education District I, Agege.

In his address, Commissioner II, Lagos State Health Service Commission, Dr Mobolaji Olukoya, said dental illness was preventable if students were compelled by schools to carry out a comprehensive medical examination at both junior and senior entry levels.

He further stated that the oral health promotion message of the programme could be imparted and reinforced throughout the most influential stages of a child’s life leading to the development of psychomotor and cognitive skills at school.

On his part, the medical director of the hospital, Dr Sola Pitan, said the programme was designed to ensure the general wellness in children.

“For us in Orile Agege, it is part of our strategic objective to take health drawbacks to the community. We have several community health initiatives that we organise periodically to address this issue. The School Oral Health programme is one of them,” he said.

Also, the Dental Centre of Randle General Hospital, Surulere, recently joined its counterparts across the globe to commemorate this year’s World Oral Health Day, with a renewed call on Lagos residents to take relevant steps to prevent oral diseases.
