Last year, 38 year social media influencer, Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, commonly known as Hushpuppi, Hush or Ray Hushpuppi was arrested and was charged by the United States with conspiracy to launder money obtained from business email compromise frauds and other scams, including schemes that defrauded a U.S. law firm of about $40M, illegally transferred $14.7M from a foreign financial institution and targeted to steal $124M from an English football club until his arrest by the Dubai Police in June 2020 and his extradition to the United States.

Despite the fact that he had this criminal record, Hushpuppi is one of the most loved as his luxurious, extravagant yet generous lifestyles make him loved in the entertainment community with some of the top music celebrities haven being linked with the instragram celebrity.

Another person presently facing criminal charges is the Yoruba activist and Oyo State born Sunday Igboho who rose into prominence following his role in the Modakeke-Ife communal crisis in 1997, where he played an active part. He also gained social media attention in January 2021 when he gave an ultimatum to Fulani herdsmen in Ibarapa to vacate the land after the killing of Dr. Aborode and enforced same. Recently, the activist has been arrested and detained with several cases named against him including entering the Benin country illegally and planning to cause trouble among others. Nigeria accuses Mr Adeyemo of stockpiling weapons, calling for the break-up of the country and inciting ethnic killings.

Sunday Igboho is well loved among the Yoruba community as his fight is justified. While his supporters hail him as a hero but his opponents say he is a dangerous rabble rouser and accuse him of inciting ethnic hatred and killing.

54-year-old Nnamdi Kanu is another prominent Nigerian presently facing serious charges †hushincluding treason. Nnamdi Kanu was relatively unknown until 2009 when he started Radio Biafra, a station that called for an independent state of Biafra for the Igbo people in the southeastern parts of the country. In 2014, he founded IPOB and was arrested the following year. Charged with treason, Kanu was incarcerated for over a year despite court orders that ruled for his release. On 28 April 2017, Kanu was released from prison on bail. After jumping bail and fleeing abroad, Kanu played a major part in the insurgency in Southeastern Nigeria, as the Nigerian security forces attempted to quash IPOB’s armed wing, the Eastern Security Network, resulting in a low-level conflict in early 2021.

In the midst of this controversy and records, Kanu is still well respected and loved among the Eastern community of Nigeria.
