Four Artist That Dumped Their Label This Year
In Nigeria, it has become a norm for artists to leave their record labels after their deals expire or when by breach of contracts from either the artist or the label to go solo. It is true that these record labels play a huge role in artist development as they provide resources to develop talents and market their music to the music space.
Record labels like Mavin Records, YBNL, Marlian Music, Davido Music Worldwide, Aristokrat Records, Starboy Entertainment, etc have been able to discover and push new talents. They discover unknown talents, develop them, brand them, sponsored them to create and market their materials. While a few record labels have failed to keep to their own promise, others have been able to fulfill theirs.
Regardless of whether there was conflict before quitting or not, a few artists have already dumped their record labels in 2021.
Nigerian popstar, Buju who was formally signed to Burna Boy's Onespaceship has now left the record label to launch his own outfit called 'To Your Ears Entertainment'. The singer who joined Burna Boy's record label a few months ago confirmed this by dropping a new single 'Outside' under his own imprint days after teaming up with Ladipoe to serve us Feeling.
Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer, Chukwuka Ekweani who is best known as CKay has recently left his record label Chocolate City for Warner Music South Africa where he dropped his new mixtape tagged 'Boyfriend'.
Afrobeat singer Terry Daniel Akewe who is best known as Terri has finally left Wizkid's Starboy Entertainment to launch a solo career as an independent artist according to our research. The singer who teamed up with Wizkid for his Starboy hit single 'Soco' recently dropped Coming Around under his own imprint as Terri as seen on digital stores. This can only be possible because his contract with Starboy Entertainment has been terminated.
Olorunyomi Oloruntimilehin aka Bad BoyTimz is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. He rose to prominence with the release of the song "MJ," and a follow-up remix that featured Nigeria singer Mayorkun.
Within the week, Bad Boy Timz after being allegedly arrested by his former record label boss, Anonymous Music has cleared the air on the termination of his contract with the record label suggesting that he is now an Indie artist.
