Starboy Entertainment boss, Ayo Balogun popularly known as Wizkid is arguably the biggest artist in Nigeria if not the continent.
The RCA recording artist, Wizkid gained prominence in 2009 following the release of his single Holla at your boy. He dropped the single after joining Banky W's record label, Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E).
Fast forward to 2021, Wizkid claimed his first Grammy awards on Sunday 14, 2021 with his contribution to Beyonce's Lion King: The Gift album. Wizkid teamed up with Beyonce, Saint JHN, and Blue Ivy on Brown Skin Girl off the soundtrack album. The singer performed on the audio and video of the song that won the Best Music Video category at the 63rd Grammys.
Despite having his name being called at the live show as one of the winners of the said award, Nigerian music fans still argue that Wizkid won't be getting a plaque. Many argue that the singer was only featured on the award-winning video and thus will be getting s certificate from the Recording Academy instead.
Well, we have done some digging on how the Grammy award works, and here is what we found.
First, the Brown Skin Girl is a song co-produced by Beyonce and P2J. Wizkid according to streaming platforms wasn't featured on the song. In fact, Wizkid is a co-owner of the song with Blue Ivy and Beyonce. If it was Beyonce ft Wizkid, then Wizkid would have received a certificate alone but if it's either Beyonce & Wizkid or Beyonce, Wizkid, Blue Ivy, Saint JHN which suggest that Wizkid is a co-owner of the song.
As a co-owner of song, Wizkid is entitled to a plaque just like Beyonce and Blue Ivy.
