Stranger Things Season 4 Is Darkest Ever, Says Finn Wolfhard

Finn Wolfhard says Stranger Things season four is the show's darkest entry yet as the series gets progressively darker with each season.

Finn Wolfhard says Stranger Things season 4 is the show's darkest entry yet. Production on the Netflix series is in full swing after COVID-related production delays saw the fourth season pushed back shortly after filming started in 2020. Netflix had hoped to premiere Stranger Things fourth season in early 2021, but production resumed in the fall and is said to be going slower than normal, so there's no return date yet for the 80s sci-fi series.

Stranger Things season 3 premiered in 2019 and the action was bigger than ever before. The show aims to go bigger and bolder than before with each season and it sounds like season four is looking to continue that trend. Stranger Things season 3 ended with the main cast spread out across the globe, with Eleven and Will leaving Hawkins, Indiana, leaving behind Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and Max. Much of the focus, however, has been on the fate of Jim Hopper (David Harbour), who was last seen at a Russian prison camp after his fate was left undetermined in the events of the finale.

Stranger Things season 4 will most certainly address that cliffhanger, among the various other loose threads left by the end of the last season, but comments from Wolfhard to CBC don't portend a tidy solution. The Mike Wheeler actor says that Stranger Things season 4 is the darkest entry for the show yet. Wolfhard says that, while he thought season 3 got particularly dark and scary, season 4 ups the ante even more. Ultimately, Wolfhard says that he is very excited for fans to see the show, but gives no hints as to when the series will return.

Every season it gets darker. I will say [with] season three I was like, ‘This is the darkest season that there’ll ever be’ – exploding rats and everything. But really, season four so far… it’s the darkest season that’s ever been [made]. Every year it gets amped-up; every year it gets funnier, darker and sadder – and everything. So I’m really excited for people to see it.

The cast and crew of Stranger Things have been steadily teasing the upcoming season without giving away too much. From a major character's return to a mysterious new murderer played by Freddy Krueger actor Robert Englund, Stranger Things is growing out of its Hawkins roots into an altogether different beast. As the characters mature into fully formed teenagers, the stakes must be risen to keep fans invested and, with Wolfhard's comments, that sounds exactly like what's happening.

Stranger Things has already had its fair share of chills and thrills, with terrifying monsters haunting Hawkins and complicated family dynamics. That will all be turned on its head in the new season, as the group is split up and they must deal with terrifying forces with considerably smaller numbers. Stranger Things will surely find a way to bring back all the characters together, but until then, they will have to face down demons, both internal and external, on their own. Sounds pretty dark, indeed.
