Suicide Squad’s Jared Leto Wants Warner Bros to #ReleaseTheAyerCut

Jared Leto, who played the Joker in David Ayer's Suicide Squad in 2016, supports the idea of Warner Bros. finally releasing the Ayer Cut.

Jared Leto supports the idea of Warner Bros. releasing the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad. David Ayer directed 2016's Suicide Squad, which was unfortunately affected by studio interference from Warner Bros. The theatrical version of Suicide Squad was drastically different from Ayer's original vision, with many storylines being changed or cut altogether. One of the biggest complaints about Suicide Squad was Leto's Joker. From the get-go, fans weren't thrilled with the look of the new Joker, but he also barely appeared in the film. A lot of Joker's scenes were cut from the theatrical version, and Ayer even planned to have Joker team up with Enchantress.

The changes Warner Bros. forced Ayer to make in Suicide Squad have now become public knowledge, which sparked the #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement online. Fans have been dying to get Ayer's version of Suicide Squad ever since the film his theaters, similar to what happened during Justice League's release. The fan demand for Zack Snyder's Justice League resulted in Warner Bros. releasing the film on HBO Max in a four-episode mini-series, but fans haven't had as much luck with the Ayer Cut. It was believed that Ayer's Suicide Squad was also being released on HBO Max, but Ayer himself debunked those rumors back in November.

Now, Leto has voiced his hopes that the Ayer Cut will be released. In an interview on Variety Awards Circuit podcast, the Academy Award-winning actor briefly addressed his thoughts on Suicide Squad and how he wants Ayer to see his vision come to life. Leto's full comment can be read below:

“I would love for him to be able to work on that and make the film of his dreams. It’s always hard when you make these movies because it’s such a pressure cooker. There are so many decisions that have to be made in a short amount of time. My hat’s off to the directors, the producers, and the studios. It’s not easy. You never start with something that’s perfect. It’s a race to try to make it as good as you can in a short amount of time. And having another swing at things? I’m sure we all can use that.”

While Warner Bros. listened to the fans and are finally releasing the Snyder Cut in March, the same may not happen with Suicide Squad. While the #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement has certainly blown up online, it hasn't been as big as the one for Justice League. Warner Bros. is also focusing on James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, the next upcoming DC film. Announcing the Ayer Cut when The Suicide Squad is being released in August could distract fans from Gunn's film and ultimately hurt the movie's performance.

Similar to what's going on with the #RestoreTheSnyderVerse movement, the fate of the Ayer Cut partly depends on the performance of Zack Snyder's Justice League on HBO Max. While it seems likely the Snyder Cut will be a popular title on HBO Max upon its release, if the film were to flop, Warner Bros. probably wouldn't even consider moving forward with the Ayer Cut. That being said, Snyder himself wants to help get the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad made, and Gunn also supports the film, which could help move things along. Given the support from the people close to the project, like Leto and Margot Robbie, the door still isn't completely closed on getting the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad.
