Tom Holland's highly-anticipated movie Cherry officially gets a 2021 release date, as well as new first look images. The Russo brothers were the ones to direct Holland's MCU debut in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, with the trio collaborating on two additional Marvel installments afterwards. Cherry will mark a noted departure for both the Russos and Holland, as they venture past the comic book world and into a gritty drama. Based on Nico Walker's autobiography of the same name, Cherry follows Holland's army vet as he returns home and begins robbing banks to support his girlfriend and opioid addiction.

With Holland's involvement being announced early in 2019 and filming taking place later that same year, fans have eagerly awaited the arrival of Cherry, as it's brand new territory for the young actor. The Russos provided various teases over the past few months as they completed post-production work, and in September, it was announced that Cherry will be released on Apple TV+ in early 2021. For some time now, there's been little news in the way of trailers or images, but now it looks like Cherry's promotional efforts are beginning now.

A slew of first look pictures for Cherry have been released, courtesy of Vanity Fair. Each picture shows Holland's Nico in several different roles, from a shell-shocked soldier to a devoted boyfriend to an aspiring bank robber, perhaps the most surprising one of all. The images also reveal the first look at Ciara Bravo as Nico's girlfriend Emily. Additionally, Vanity Fair has revealed Cherry will debut in theaters on February 26 before premiering on Apple TV+ on March 12.

Most audiences know Holland best as the MCU's bright-eyed Peter Parker, making Cherry even more of a major change for the actor. Holland has already dipped his toes into more serious projects with movies like The Devil All the Time, and his fans are looking forward to seeing what he'll do next. The grim subject matter of Cherry will provide plenty of material for Holland to sink his teeth into, and the above images show just how much the movie will ask of him. As a soldier, an addict, and a criminal, Nico has a lot of sides to him that Holland will have to convincingly portray.

2021 is shaping up to be quite the year for Holland, as he also has three franchise installments on the way. In addition to the MCU's third Spider-Man movie, Holland has the long-awaited Uncharted and Chaos Walking. All three of those are more of the standard action/YA flicks Holland is known for, making Cherry something of an outlier for the year. It'll give Holland the chance to spread this wings. Luckily, fans won't have to wait too much longer to see how he does.
